At Laem Chabang’s Port on Wednesday, Bangkok’s Governor His Excellency Sukhumpan Boripat conducted a Ceremony to accept the arrival of 4 BTS passenger railway cars, of the 35 ordered from Siemens. The new carriages were ordered in September 2010 with a budget of 2.1billion baht. These first 4 cars will be transported to the Mor-chit Maintenance Garage in Bangkok, to be fitted with A/C and other systems, before being tested for reliability on the tracks. The Bangkok Administration believes that these 4 carriages will be functional by this November.
As there are 3 carriages in each BTS skytrain, the Bangkok Administration is allocating the 2.1 billion baht to add 1 carriage to each BTS line. 4 railroad cars should be sufficient for the needs of the passengers, and in 2013, there will be a total of 47 lines and 188 cars, able to transport 30,000 passengers per hour, starting with the Sukhumvit – On Nut – Barring Line, which runs for 5.25 km. The Bangkok Administration will continue to upgrade the BTS skytrain, to meet their target of 52 lines and 208 cabins.
