Mystery Surrounds Two Shooting Incidents on Beach Road - Pattaya People

In the early hours of Wednesday, Pattaya Police was called out by the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team to Beach Road near Soi 8 to investigate a shooting incident.  A Mr. Wuttipong aged 27 had been shot three times and was found unconscious.  He was given first aid and then rushed to nearby Pattaya Memorial Hospital.  On searching the area, an officer found a 9mm gun in the sea near the shore.  At the hospital, officers came across another man named Pradit, who had also been shot by an unknown man at a bar on Soi 7.  Pradit died of his wounds, and police believe because he looked very similar to Wuttipong, he was mistakenly shot by the gunman believing he was Wuttipong.  The two cases are being investigated to find out if there is any connection.

Riot Breaks Out at Pattaya Police Station - Pattaya People

Pattaya police had to stop a confrontation at their police station in the early hours of Wednesday morning, when a Turkish man and his Thai girlfriend confronted a Thai couple after an earlier motorcycle accident near Chaimongkol temple.  This incident caused the Turk and the Thai male rider to begin a fight at the accident scene, until police stopped them and brought them back to the police station.  However, the fighting broke out again as the Turk unexpectedly stood up and punched the Thai man and the police had to separate them once again. Once they calmed down they were both called back for interrogation. But yet again the Turk attacked the Thai, until the Thai’s friends who had gathered inside the station in retaliation began beating up the Turk, and police had to separate the whole group, who were all charged with inciting a riot and were a danger to the public.

Police Search on Jomtien Beach for Missing Russian Girl - Pattaya People

The Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team were called out in the early hours of Thursday to Jomtien Beach to help search for a teenage Russian girl gone missing that evening.  On the shore the distraught mother had trouble in communicating with the team as she spoke no English, plus the fact that she was extremely drunk.  Twice she had to be forced from jumping into the sea as she believed her daughter had drowned.  Sea Rescue was already at work in speed boats searching the waters along Jomtien beach, but after hours of searching it was to no avail.  The woman was taken back to her hotel as plans were set to carry on the search during day break.  Then the twist in the tale struck everyone; as the woman was taken to her room, officers found that her daughter was sleeping soundly in bed, much to the embarrassment of the drunken mother. A report was made and possible legal procedures may occur for wasting police and Sawang Boriboon time.

Da Nicola Pizza - Pattaya People

This time round it was to Jomtien and a visit to a recently opened Sicilian style Pizzeria called Da Nicola Pizza.   It is the creation of Australian born award winning chef Nico, hence the name.  Nico was born in Sydney, but is descended from a Sicilian family.  Da Nicola Pizza is located in a modern building on a side road off the new Jomtien Second Road, not too far from the Jomtien Plaza.  Simply decorated, but with a few Sicilian and Australian memorabilia scattered throughout this small but cosy restaurant and take away.  Already, the word is spreading as Nico has now a good number of regular customers who have nothing but praise for his Pizzas.

The menu is quite straightforward, mainly offering a choice of 12 styles of Pizza, all freshly made and prepared by Nico himself and cooked in an electric Pizza oven.  For the record, Sicilian style Pizza has a slightly thicker dough base that isn’t allowed to rise and is chewable and can be folded. The sauce is also thicker and allowed to marinade on the dough for a few minutes before being cooked in a hot oven.

They range from 220 baht for a simple but classic Margherita, with homemade Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese and fresh Basil leaves, to a popular house specialty Tarcoli Pizza at 280 baht for Ham, Chicken, Mozzarella Cheese, Aubergine/Eggplant, Tomato and Garlic and Chili.  There are also two styles of Calzone, folded over Pizza dough filled with a choice of Salami and Ricotta or Eggplant/Aubergine, Tomato and Mozzarella Cheese, both at 270 baht.  Nico also offers a few Pasta dishes, such as Spaghetti Bolognese (230 baht), Penne with Mushrooms, Bacon and Cream (250 baht), and Lasagna (240 baht) and potato dumpling Gnocchi (250 baht).    Also available are a few side dishes such as Garlic Bread with Olive Oil at 150 baht, Salad at 90 baht, and Bruschetta (190 baht) with chopped Tomato, Garlic, Basil and Olive Oil served on Italian Bread.   So, what did we try?  Well, Pizza of course!  Plus a bowl of Spaghetti Bolognese with plenty of Parmesan Cheese!  We tried Nico’s house specialty Australian Pizza at 250 baht for Bacon, Egg, Tomato and Mozzarella Cheese.  Then it was on to a nearer to home Pizza style, aptly called Pattaya Pizza (260 baht) with Ham, Salami, Olives, Capsicum/Bell Pepper, Tomato, Chicken and Mozzarella Cheese.  Finally, a unique twist to the classic Hawaiian Pizza (270 baht) covered with Ham, Salami, Onion, Capsicum, Mushrooms, Olives, Pineapple chunks, Tomato Sauce and Mozzarella Cheese.

What did they taste like?  Well, we have to agree with Nico’s regular customers’ remarks, as they really are excellent, with a perfectly presented thin, foldable and chewy Pizza base, smothered with all those tasty fresh toppings.

If you like wine, do try the exceptionally good Italian house wines at 80 baht a glass.  Bottled beer is sold at 75 baht for Heineken and 60 baht for Chang.  Espresso coffee is 50 baht and Cappuccino at 60 baht a cup.

So, for a truly great tasting Sicilian style Pizza why not get down to Da Nicola, and try one for yourself all courtesy of chef Nico and his friendly staff.

Nightlife News: Submarine Re-surfaces...

Miami A-GoGo opened on Soi 13/2 (Soi Post Office). The venue was previously that used by Hot & Cold before it moved

I stopped by in the early evening and it was all very disappointing.

The bar is quite traditionally laid out with a smallish central stage. There is comfortable bench seating to the right, a little bench seating to the left, but for the most part there is a long bar counter with a few swivel stools.

The bar looks a little incomplete as there is a large unused space behind the central stage. Perhaps space for a Jacuzzi stage or something later. But in the meantime it leaves a lot of the back right bench seating overlooking exactly nothing.

There were just 2 dancers taking turns and each were dancing for 3 songs. Topless was the dress code. The dancers were below average. There were however 2 other bikini clad girls who were excused dancing for some reason. One was below below average, but the other was attractive. However she was enjoying a chat with her friend rather than doing anything that may improve customer experience in the bar.

Draft beer was 50 Baht but that has already been reduced from the 60 Baht reported at the opening, a few days ago.

All very dreadful but at least its bound to better next time.

Pattaya News: Gunfight at the Silver Star Saloon...

/- 12 hours

29th December 2012. From Thai Visa with thanks to Dick Farang

Dick Farang noted that local press reports put the time of the shooting at 5pm and 4am.

However an eye witness added his experience to the Thai Visa forum and noted that the shooting occurred at around 3am:

OK as I was there I will put this story straight. We went inside the bar at around 3.00am (approx) We herd about 3 pops outside and I saw the security run inside, one had blood coming out of his neck. It turned out to be a flesh wound. within a min all the staff were armed and went out.

We left about 5 mins later and outside there were at least 20 Thais arguing. At this point I did not see anyone fatally wounded outside like several stories have suggested. Apparently the fatality was shot in the head. Well I do not think he was shot in the head with the initial 3 shots anyway otherwise I would have seen him floored outside! We walked away and the police sirens where coming from the top and bottom of the soi. So all this secondary shooting must have erupted in the presence of the police as the guy lay on the beach road looked very similar to one of the Thais who was arguing outside.

To me it seems a second bout of shooting must have started shortly after we got off. It was like the gun fight at the OK coral, EVERYONE was carrying.

Crook Disguised as Policeman Tricks Security Guard - Pattaya People

On Wednesday, the police were called by a security guard of the Kee-ree-racha Villas in Sriracha, Mr. Somchai Pantujinda, age 55. His black-yellow Honda Wave 125 had been swiped by a young man, age around 25, who claimed to be a police officer from Pluak-daeng, and was having trouble with his police motorcycle.

At the scene, the officers found a black Kawasaki police motorcycle parked by the security guard box, with stickers of the Pluak-daeng Police Station on the sides of the bike. Somchai confirmed that this motorcycle was being pushed down the road by the thief, who claimed to be a policeman having troubles with his government motorcycle. The robber then asked Somchai for assistance by swapping their motorcycles, and said he would return shortly.

Somchai finally called the police to investigate, after waiting a long time.  Somchai started to doubt the story from this stranger, so further investigations started immediately.

Fire Breaks Out at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya - Pattaya People

There was a real emergency at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on Thursday morning when a fire was discovered near the Emergency Room.   The fire alarms went off and all patients being treated in Emergency and major equipment were immediately evacuated as the fire brigade and Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team were called for assistance.  As 5 fire trucks arrived, thick black smoke was seen billowing near the building’s electricity control room about 30 meters from the Emergency Room.  Thankfully, the firefighters with the help of medical staff had the blaze under control within minutes.  The primary assumption was that it started from a short circuit.  Later that afternoon, the Director of the hospital, Dr. Pichit Gangwoengit announced that even though the hospital has a high standard of safety the fire probably began from a burnt out light bulb, near the control room, which had overheated after been left on for a long time.  The director also thanked all concerned, including medical staff, for conducting their duties professionally during the incident, because they all regularly take part in fire drills at the hospital to be ready in case of emergencies.
