Nam Prik Cooking Competition - Pattaya People

On Tuesday, at the house of the Village Chief of Moo 11, in the Nongkaam Sub-district of Sriracha, the Nongkaam Housewives Group held a “Naam-prik Cooking Competition” to get all housewives to challenge each team with the Thai Traditional sauce called “Naam-prik” cooking competition to win 3 of 5 Committees’ hearts to win 5,000 baht.

Nam phrik in Thai literally means "fluid chili", pronounced "nam phik" and is a generic for the many varieties of types spicy, chili-based, hot sauces. Usual ingredients for nam phrik are fresh or dry chilies, garlic, shallots, lime juice and fish or shrimp paste. In the traditional way of preparing the sauce, the ingredients are pounded together using a large mortar and pestle, with either salt or fish sauce added to taste.

“Naam-prik” is also the gauge to evaluate a woman, to see if she can be a good wife and cook.  The “Naam-prik” ingredients need to be thoroughly mashed and mixed well to be tasty. So, the Housewives Group of Nongkaam held this contest to find the best cook in town, to supply Nam Prik to OTOP (One Tambon-One Product).  After the Naam-prik Cooking Competition, the ladies also offered many educational programs, including how to make Herbal Soaps. All the members were very pleased with their new skills, and will certainly use this knowledge in the future.
